# CASE STUDY

## Dwell Time Analysis for National Parks

With a recent explosion in visitorship, the National Park Service (NPS) was concerned that traditional methods weren’t capturing all park trips. NPS worked with StreetLight and Fehr & Peers to create a framework to explore Big Data’s ability to comprehensively represent park visitor movements.

Working with Fehr & Peers, StreetLight created a custom Origin-Destination analysis to quantify what NPS knew only anecdotally, including: 

- “Dwell time” spent at various points of interest in the park
- Elapsed time between trip ends and starts
- How visitors were moving through the park and gateway communities

See the analysis that helped NPS better understand visitor-use management, create more transparency with gateway communities, and inform decisions on economic development.
