How Freight Traffic Data Enables Safer, More Efficient Truck Routing
After rising freight traffic in residential areas introduced safety challenges in Northern Alameda County, planners at the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) wanted actionable insights on truck travel patterns to assist communities with freight planning efforts.
Together with engineers from Kittelson & Associates, Caltrans tapped StreetLight to launch a study of freight truck movement across the county. StreetLight’s freight traffic analytics helped their teams:
Identify freight movements and hotspots between local destinations and highways
Uncover reasons why truck traffic was leaving the freeway at certain locations
Inform local prioritization of corridor improvements like optimized truck routing

"StreetLight can be very effective in refining an analysis and a deep dive study. We could create a narrative that helped us set priorities."
