Gauging Demand for Intercity Passenger Rail Service

A regional rail operator had comprehensive data on existing ridership, but in order to build a travel demand model to predict expansion they needed insight into overall regional travel patterns by different modes.

Steer turned to StreetLight’s Metrics to quickly and easily measure trips between five major metropolitan areas along the rail operator’s major travel corridor. StreetLight customized an Origin-Destination analysis to capture:

  • O-D pairs up to 350 miles apart
  • long-distance trips broken up by multiple trip stops
  • air travel O-D pairs

See the analysis that Steer then applied to other rail projects elsewhere in the U.S.
